HESI A2 Exam Prep Guide for Nursing School
How to prepare for the HESI A2: sections, score goals, study schedule, and section-by-section strategies for nursing applicants.
The HESI A2 is often the gatekeeper to nursing school admission or progression. It is less about “nursing clinical judgment” and more about proving you can handle the academic load ahead — reading, math, science, and English. A focused plan beats vague “study everything” advice.
Know What Your School Requires
HESI A2 content can vary by program. Before you buy materials or build a schedule, confirm:
- Which sections are required (Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Physics, etc.)
- Minimum composite and/or section scores
- How many attempts are allowed and what the wait period is
- Whether a calculator is permitted on math items
Studying sections your school does not use wastes precious weeks.
Section-by-Section Strategy
Reading Comprehension
You will interpret passages, main ideas, supporting details, and inferences.
Practice: Timed passages daily. Underline the question task first (main idea vs detail vs inference), then scan — do not drown in every sentence equally.
Vocabulary and Grammar
Expect word meanings in context, commonly confused words, and sentence structure.
Practice: 15–20 vocabulary cards daily from HESI lists + short grammar drills (subject-verb agreement, pronoun reference, punctuation).
Math
Ratios, proportions, decimals, fractions, household/metric conversions, and basic algebra appear frequently — dosage-style thinking without full clinical stems.
Practice: Conversion sheet until automatic; then timed problem sets. Show work even when practicing digitally so errors are visible.
Biology / Chemistry / A&P
Science depth depends on your required sections. A&P is often the heaviest for nursing hopefuls: body systems, terminology, and basic physiology.
Practice: System-by-system outlines + practice quizzes. Focus on high-yield structures/functions rather than memorizing obscure trivia.
Build a 4-Week HESI Plan
Week 1 — Diagnostic + foundations
- Take a full practice A2 (or section diagnostics)
- List weak sections by score
- Rebuild math conversions and grammar rules
Week 2 — Weak section immersion
- 60–90 minutes daily on lowest sections
- 30 minutes on a stronger section to maintain gains
Week 3 — Mixed practice
- Alternate full section tests
- Error log: concept miss vs careless miss
- Start light full-length simulations
Week 4 — Simulation + taper
- 1–2 full practice exams under realistic timing
- Review only error log and formula sheet
- Sleep, nutrition, and logistics (ID, arrival time, testing rules)
Score smarter
A 10-point gain in your weakest required section often helps the composite more than polishing an already strong section.
Test-Day Execution
- Answer easier items first within a section if the interface allows movement — confirm with your test rules.
- Flag and return when stuck; do not bleed five minutes on one stem.
- For reading, read the question before the passage when allowed by your strategy preference — many students save time that way.
- Double-check math units and decimal placement.
After the Score Report
If you fall short:
- Remediating randomly is slow — target the section that dragged the composite down
- Rebook only after a structured 2–3 week patch, not a panicked weekend
- Keep the same error log so you do not re-miss identical conversion or grammar traps
