How to Pass the NCLEX on Your First Try

Proven strategies, study schedules, and test-day tips to help you pass the NCLEX-RN on your first attempt.

Passing the NCLEX-RN on your first try is a goal shared by nearly every nursing graduate. While the exam can feel overwhelming, a structured approach to preparation can make all the difference.

Start with a Diagnostic Assessment

Before diving into content review, take a practice exam to identify your weak areas. Focus your study time on topics where you score below 70% — pharmacology, prioritization, and infection control are common trouble spots.

Build a Realistic Study Schedule

Most successful candidates study 4–8 weeks before their exam date. Aim for 2–3 hours of focused study per day rather than marathon cramming sessions. Break your schedule into:

  • Week 1–2: Content review by body system
  • Week 3–4: Practice questions (75–100 per day)
  • Week 5–6: Full-length practice exams and weak-area review
  • Final week: Light review, rest, and test-day preparation

Master NCLEX Question Types

The NCLEX uses several question formats beyond standard multiple choice:

  • Select All That Apply (SATA) — Treat each option independently
  • Ordered Response — Follow the nursing process (assess → diagnose → plan → implement → evaluate)
  • Hot Spot / Highlight — Read the entire passage before selecting
  • Bowtie / Matrix — Practice these with dedicated NGN prep materials

Test-Day Strategies

  1. Arrive early and bring required identification
  2. Use the tutorial time to calm your nerves
  3. Read each question twice before answering
  4. Don't change answers unless you're certain of an error
  5. Take scheduled breaks to stay fresh
